Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

The leading U.S. authority on the COVID-19 pandemic made some grim predictions about the course of the novel coronavirus as it rages through communities within the United States.

Iran Press/America: “I mean, looking at what we’re seeing now, I would say between 100,000 and 200,000 … deaths,” Fauci told, though he added: “I just don’t think that we really need to make a projection when it’s such a moving target that you can so easily be wrong and mislead people.”

Answering a question about Trump’s suggestion on Saturday of quarantining New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, Fauci said: “We had very intensive discussions last night at the White House with the president.”

“As you know, the original proposal was to consider seriously an enforceable quarantine. After discussions with the president, we made it clear, and he agreed, that it would be much better to do what’s called a strong advisory,” Fauci added.

According to the latest official figures, the US has confirmed more than 133,000 cases of Covid-19, and 2,363 deaths.

In New York, the state worst hit, Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday announced a death toll of 965, which is 237 up on the figure the day before.
