Iran Press/ America: More than 2,000 people have died in the United States after testing positive for the novel coronavirus, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The deaths have more than doubled since Thursday when American health officials reported 1,000 deaths. Prior to that, roughly one month lapsed between the first reported coronavirus death in the US and the 1,000th.
Meanwhile, doctors and health care workers across the US have warned of dangerous shortages in essential medical equipment such as ventilators, and protective gear such as masks, gowns, gloves, and more.
The number of fatalities around the world soared past 30,000 on Saturday, 10,023 of which were reported in Italy alone.
The southern European country remains the hardest-hit country in the world, with 889 new deaths on Saturday while a total of 92,472 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus have now been reported in Italy.
Spain’s Covid-19 death toll last week surpassed that of China and is now second only to Italy’s. Yesterday the number of deaths surged to a new record for the country, with 832 people dying in 24 hours. The virus has so far claimed 5,982 lives.
The figures last night prompted the prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, to tighten its lockdown and order all non-essential workers to stay at home for the next two weeks. In a televised address he said, “extraordinarily tough” measures were needed as the county intensified its efforts to contain the pandemic.
Thailand recorded 143 new coronavirus infections and one death on Sunday, a spokesman for the Thai government said.
COVID-19 was first detected in China's Wuhan in late December and has since spread across the world. In late January, the World Health Organisation declared a global health emergency in light of the epidemic.
Coronavirus kills more than 30,000 people across the globe
The new figures bring the total number of cases and deaths since the beginning of the outbreak in Thailand to 1,338 and seven, respectively.
China's National Health Commission reported 45 new COVID-19 cases on the mainland, of which all but one were imported by travelers from overseas.
New Zealand recorded 60 new infections in the past 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases to 476. Also, New Zealand reported its first death from COVID-19, prompting Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to renew calls on the public to "stay at home, break the chain, and save lives".
Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 105 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total infections throughout the outbreak in the country to 9,583.
A total of 5,033 people have fully recovered, while the death toll was 152, the public health agency said.
