Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has stressed that Iran will remain a supporter of the Iraqi nation and government.

Iran Press/Iran news: Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a meeting with Iraqi President Barham Salih on Monday reiterated Iran’s willingness to enhance mutual cooperation with Iraq, saying that the country will remain a supporter of the Iraqi nation and government in all phases, including reconstruction.

Zarif, heading a politico-economic delegation, is currently in Baghdad for talks with senior Iraqi officials, Iran Press reported.

Iraqi President Barham Salih, for his part, said that Iran and Iraq are major players within the region and are influential countries.

Iraqi President added that strengthening ties between the two nations will not only benefit both nations but also the entire region.

"Today, regional states shoulder a heavy responsibility to overcome the existing crises," Salih said.

“Current regional situation prompts us to engage in constructive dialogue with all sides to build pillars of stability in the region through further efforts and coordination,” he said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also met Hadi al-Ameri, the head of Iraq’s Construction Alliance parliamentary faction and its members in Baghdad on Monday afternoon.

According to the official website of Iranian Foreign Ministry, in the meeting, al-Ameri pointed to the efforts of the alliance in the recent elections to overcome tribalism, saying that “the faction includes members of different religions and ethnicities, and the people’s attachment to the coalition showed that people want to defeat tribalism.”

Also in a meeting with former Iraqi prime minister Ayad Aalvi and former parliament speaker Salim Al-Jabouri, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reaffirmed Iran’s support for the Iraqi nation and government in the country’s reconstruction.

Zarif also met with former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Monday in Baghdad.

Zarif’s high-profile visit to Baghdad comes less than a week after the visit of Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh to the Iraqi capital.
