400 tons of different types of illegal drugs have been seized by Iranian police in first 5 months of this year

Secretary-General of Iran's Anti-Narcotics Headquarters has announced that 400 tons of different types of illegal drugs have been seized in the first 5 months of this year which shows a 12 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Iran Press/Iran News: Speaking in the province of Isfahan, Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni also said that in the last five months, 20 tons of narcotics have been confiscated in the province Of Isfahan that shows 30 percent increase comparing to the same period last year.

“In the meeting with ‘Anti-Drug Coordination Council of Isfahan’, we have made decisions in the national and provincial levels, including establishing special treatment and rehabilitation centers for female addicts,” he said, adding that “Women suffer the main damage of addiction problems and we intent to establish a special centre for female addicts in the province,” Iran Press reported.

The top police officer mentioned in his remarks that at a national level, the police force will use drones to cover central deserts of Iran in their monitoring and surveillance operations, and if needed, the use of these drones will be expanded in the future.

Afghanistan is one of the main sources of opium production in the world and Iran is on the frontline of the fight against drug trafficking. The war on drugs originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past four decades and despite high economic and human costs, Iran has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for Europe, Arab countries and countries in Central Asia.

According to reports, Iranian forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing more than 800 tons of various types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in 2018 alone.   101/212/ 211
