Iranian foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, says the era of zero sum games is long gone.

Zarif made the remarks while addressing the Council on Foreign Relations on Monday in New York.

"In the wars of 20th and 21st centuries, there are no winners; only the degree and amount of loss will be different. In the globalized era... you cannot have security at the expense of insecurity of others," he said, adding, "The era of hegemonic influence is long gone."

He added that Saudi Arabia is trying to portray Iran as a regional threat, and called for more dialogue among regional countries.

Mohammad Javad Zarif said, "In an attempt to be the strongest in the region, to exclude one another from the region, we have managed to destroy the region."

He told the Council on Foreign Relations that there is "a dire need for change" and "Iran is ready for it because we are big enough, old enough, mature enough to appreciate this reality."

Saudi Arabia is well-known in the Middle East as a country which supports militants and terrorists, in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere. Riyadh is the main supporter of terrorists fighting the Syrian government.
