Iran Press/ Africa: The withdrawal process, which involves approximately 1,100 U.S. troops, is expected to be completed by September 15. This decision comes on the heels of France's earlier military departure from the country, also at the request of the Nigerien people.
"The withdrawal of American forces is the right decision because, despite their presence, terrorist attacks continued in the country," said Ari Malam Wali, a Nigerien citizen, in an interview with IranPress in Niamey. He further expressed his support for the cancellation of Niger's security agreement with the United States, stating that foreign forces have been exploiting Niger's resources.
Another Nigerien citizen, Hali Mahamane, echoed similar sentiments, noting that while the stated purpose of foreign military presence was to combat terrorism, this scourge has only spread further due to their involvement. He emphasized the need for the Nigerien government to seek partnerships with other nations that align with the country's interests and promote cooperation to strengthen its military capabilities.
Tsayabou Kadi, a third interviewee, described the presence of American troops in Niger as illegal and welcomed their withdrawal as a prudent decision.
The people of Niger appear to be united in their belief that the departure of U.S. forces will enable their country to fully exercise its sovereignty and chart its own course in addressing security challenges. As Niger navigates this transition, it remains to be seen how the country will forge new partnerships and strategies to combat terrorism while safeguarding its national interests.
