The United Nations Security Council has become a hostage to the United States’ West Asia policy, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said.

Iran PressAmerica: "We regret this very much. The actions of our American colleagues do not reflect the principled position of the rest of the UN Security Council members who have become hostages to the US West Asia policy in the past six months," he said at a meeting of the UN General Assembly following the US veto of the UN Security Council resolution on admitting Palestine as a full-fledged UN member.

Commenting on Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip, Nebenzia said that Washington’s actions “absolutely do not reflect the principled position taken by the remaining members of the UN Security Council, who over the past six months, in fact, became hostages of the US when it comes to the events in the Middle East.”

The Russian envoy also stressed that “violence generates more violence, and this vicious circle can only be broken if we achieve an unconditional ceasefire and begin substantive discussions about the possibility of a just political settlement.”

The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip from the ongoing Israeli attacks is nearly 34,600 people.
