Iran Press/Iran news: The Director of UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Agnes Marcaillou, in an exclusive interview with Iran Press International News Agency on Tuesday, said today is an important first step in the cooperation between the United Nation's Mine Action Service and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Taking part in an international roundtable discussion on humanitarian mine action, challenges and best actions held in Tehran from 12 to14 March, Marcaillou said that the presence of the United Nation in Iran is a long term presence, every agency has a role to play and I am grateful for the invitation extended to the United Nation's Mine Action Service to contribute to the international exchanges that will take place this week on solutions to the problems caused by (anti-personnel mine) contamination.
Marcaillou added: "This week will give us the opportunity to share vast experiences that the UN has acquired in public awareness, mine risk education, victim assistance and also clearance."
The UNMAS Director went on to say: "We will be able to discuss that with other countries and see how we can understand better the specific needs and requirements of the population of Iran in order to help, but also how the United Nation can facilitate the cooperation between affected countries."
An international roundtable on humanitarian mine action was held in Tehran with the participation of representatives of Asian countries, and international demining organizations.
The event was hosted by Iran's Ministry of Defense. Senior figures attending the roundtable discussion included Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami, and representatives of various Asian countries and the Commonwealth of Nations and the representatives of other international organizations actively involved in humanitarian mine action. 104/211/209
