Iran Press/Africa: Ugandan police report that the death toll from landslides caused by torrential rains in eastern Uganda has reached 28, following the recovery of additional bodies by rescue workers.
Local residents are frantically digging through the mud with hand hoes and basic tools, desperately searching for their missing loved ones. Ugandan authorities report that over 100 people are still unaccounted for.
"The Police, together with other sister security agencies and with the help of the local community, have intensified rescue operations," police said in a statement. "However, these efforts are being hindered by impassable roads, which are preventing vehicles, including ambulances and wheel loaders, from reaching the scene."
The Uganda Red Cross Society said that at least 45 households were completely buried, with several others partially damaged.
The affected area spans approximately 50 acres, encompassing homesteads and farmlands scattered across the downhill terrain.
Since October, unusually heavy rainfall has affected the East African nation, resulting in widespread flooding and landslides across various regions.
Two rescue boats capsized during a mission on the River Nile, where the Pakwach bridge, linking Uganda to South Sudan and neighboring countries, was submerged.
