Baghdad Operations Command said several security forces were wounded on Friday by the direct shooting of protesters at al-Khalani Square in the capital's downtown.

Iran Press/Middle East: The security forces were subjected to direct firing of demonstrators this morning in al-Khalani Square in Baghdad, which left several officers injured.

Baghdad Operations Command has emphasized that demonstrators must identify those who have opened fire on security forces to maintain calm at the scene because the use of firearms and shooting at security officials denies the principle of peaceful protest.

Al-Khalani Square in central Baghdad has become the main center of protests and clashes between protesters and Iraqi security forces since about three weeks ago.

According to some reports, so far at least 10 people have been killed and about 130 injured in the clashes.

The central and southern provinces of Iraq have been the scene of popular protests over poverty and unemployment, inequality, social welfare and corruption in the West Asian state for about five months.
