Iran Press/America: According to Reuters, thirteen members of the Security Council sent letters stressing that Washington had withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and the US is no longer a member of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that wanted to invoke the trigger mechanism.
The members stated that the United States does not have the legal right to reinstate sanctions on Iran under Security Council Resolution 2231.
The Dominican Republic alone has not opposed US efforts over the trigger mechanism.
Security Council members opposed US use of trigger mechanism as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrote a letter to the UN Security Council President on Thursday evening accusing Iran of violating the JCPOA and formally calling for the return of sanctions on Iran.
The European troika (France, Germany, and Britain) also delivered letters to the President of the Security Council opposing the US move.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry also stated that the United States has no right to reinstate Security Council sanctions against Iran.
The United States withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) two years ago, without regard to UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
In a new legal interpretation, the US claims that according to the provisions of this resolution, it is still one of the participants in the JCPOA; and in this context, US has the right to use the mechanisms mentioned in this agreement, including the trigger mechanism for the return of sanctions against Iran.
Russia, China, France, the UK, and Germany have opposed the US request.
