Iran Press/ Europe: The United Nations General Assembly consists of 193 members, which voted on June 16 to elect five new non-permanent members of the Security Council for the period 2024-2025.
Slovenia, South Korea, Guyana, Sierra Leone, and Algeria are the five new members of the Security Council, replacing Albania, Gabon, Ghana, the United Arab Emirates, and Brazil, whose terms expire on December 31.
The Security Council is one of the five main UN bodies. Its permanent members are Britain, China, Russia, the United States and France. The 10 non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms. Five of the 10 are up for re-election each year.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that permanent membership of Germany and Japan in the UN Security Council is out of the question.
Lavrov said the accession of these countries to the Security Council would only deepen the injustice, since at the moment more than a third of the Council represent the countries of the golden billion.
US President Joe Biden has called for an increase in the number of permanent members of theUN Security Council.
Lavrov said it’s been a long time since India and Brazil officially submitted their applications for permanent membership in the UN Security Council.
