Tehran (IP) - Supporting the presence of Iraq as an important country of the Arab League in regional interactions, Iran's president welcomed the positive role of Baghdad in mediating to resolve differences between countries in the region.

Iran PressIran news: In a telephone call with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi on Monday, congratulating the government and people of this Muslim and neighboring country on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, President Rouhani said: "ISIS terrorist group remains an important security threat in the region, and cooperation between the two countries is essential to counter this terrorist group."

Rouhani lamented the recent attacks on Iranian diplomatic facilities in Iraq by some individuals and groups and stressed the need for the Iraqi government to respond decisively and quickly to these attacks.

"The United States has always played a destructive role in the region, and their presence in Iraq will not contribute to the stability and security of this country," he said, noting that the United States is playing a role which constitutes a double standard in the fight against terrorism and its operations on the Iraqi-Syrian border are ambiguous.

Welcoming Iraq's position on Palestine and condemning the recent crimes committed by the Israeli regime in the occupied territories and Gaza, the President stressed: "We expect Iraq, given its capacity in the Arab League, to make this union more active on the issue of Palestine."

Emphasizing the need to develop and deepen relations between the two countries in various political and economic fields and to expand regional cooperation, Rouhani stated: "Iran and Iraq can cover each other as two complementary economies, given their economic potential."

In this phone call, al-Kazemi congratulated the Iranian government and people on Eid al-Fitr, and strongly condemned the recent crimes of the Israeli regime in Palestine, as well as the aggression and killing of defenseless people in Gaza.

Al-Kazemi stressed the need for a serious and decisive confrontation with these crimes, noting: "In consultation with the leaders of Islamic countries and the Arab League, we will definitely take a firm position in this regard."

He also stressed the need to seriously confront the terrorist acts of the ISIS group in the region and appreciated the cooperation of the Islamic Republic of Iran with Iraq in this regard.

Emphasizing the need to develop and deepen bilateral and regional relations between Tehran and Baghdad, the Iraqi Prime Minister, referring to the approval of the Basra-Shalamcheh railway construction agreement by the Iraqi Council of Ministers, said: "This important project is in the implementation stage today."

Mustafa al-Kazemi expressed his regret and apology for the recent encroachment of some individuals on Iran's diplomatic facilities in Iraq, emphasizing that this issue is being pursued and the perpetrators will be dealt with seriously.
