Tehran (AP) - Putin apologized to Aliyev in a conversation for the plane crash that occurred in Russian airspace.

Iran Press/Europe: Sputnik reported that the special services of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan are closely cooperating at the crash site near Aktau - the Kremlin.

The Kremlin also said that the Russian Investigative Committee would open a criminal case after the Azerbaijani plane crash under the heading of "violation of the rules of traffic safety and air transport operations."

An Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane crashed on Wednesday morning, December 25, with 67 people on board, killing 38 people and saving 29 others.

Flight J2-8243, which had left Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, for the Russian city of Grozny on that day, was forced to change course for unknown reasons and make an emergency landing about 3 kilometers from the Kazakh city of Aktau.

The landing was accompanied by a fire that destroyed half of the aircraft, killing both pilots.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev described the incident as a “great tragedy” and said the prime minister would head a commission to investigate the incident.

On Thursday, a source in Baku told Euronews that the plane was “hit by a Russian surface-to-air missile.”

The Kremlin warned against drawing any conclusions before the investigation is complete. “It would be wrong to make any assumptions before the investigation is complete,” said Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Vladimir Putin. “Neither we nor anyone else should do that.”

Azerbaijan Airlines said it had suspended all scheduled flights between Baku and Grozny, as well as flights between Baku and Makhachkala (the capital of the Russian autonomous republic of Dagestan) until the investigation is complete.
