Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that he will deploy troops and strike systems near Finland and Sweden's borders following their accession to NATO

Iran PressEurope: Russian President Vladimir Putin said Finland and Sweden's entry into NATO is 'a meaningless step', adding that Russia will deploy troops and systems of destruction on the Finnish border following its accession to the alliance last April.

"This is a meaningless step [for Finland and Sweden] from the point of view of ensuring their own national interests," Putin told Russia's RIA state news agency and Rossiya-1 state television in a wide-ranging interview.

In 2021, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin changed the status of the Russian Northern Fleet, whose zone of responsibility was chiefly the Russian Arctic, to the Northern Military District, incorporating into the Murmansk region, which shares borders with Finland and Norway.

Sweden is now fully covered by Article 5 of the alliance, which requires all other members to defend one another in the event of an attack. 219
