Director General of Ports and Maritime Organisation (PMO) of Hormozgan province has described manufacture of boats (known locally as Lenj ) as one of Iran's unique handicrafts.

Iran Press/ Iran news: "Manufacture of boats is the biggest marine handicraft in the world and the Persian Gulf is the center of it," director general of Ports and Maritime Organisation (PMO) of Hormozgan province, Morad Afifipour said.

Afifipour made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Iran Press.

Two months ago, the largest fibreglass boats made in Iran were exported to the countries of the Persian Gulf region.

"Handicraft is one of the competitive advantages in any country and society," Afifipour added.

Manufacturing boats (or 'Lenj' as it is known locally) plays a significant role in job creation and economic development of the region.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) registered the skill for manufacturing boats (or 'Lenj' ) and also traditional Iranian sailing and navigation as part of the 'Intangible Cultural Heritage' of UNESCO.

Hormozgan Province with 60 floating factories is one of the main hubs for producing and exporting boats (or 'lenj') in southern Iran. 204/201
