Debris and trash from a North Korean balloon landed on the South Korean presidential compound on Wednesday, sparking concerns about the security of important South Korean facilities in the face of North Korean provocations.

Iran PressAsia: Trash from at least one North Korean balloon fell on the South Korean presidential compound Wednesday, raising worries about the security of key South Korean facilities from North Korean provocations.

South Korea's presidential security service said that the rubbish that fell on the ground at the compound in central Seoul contained no dangerous material and no one was hurt.

It is the first time the South Korean leader's office in downtown Seoul, which is protected by scores of soldiers and a no-fly zone, has been directly hit by any of the thousands of trash-carrying balloons launched by Pyongyang since May.

In recent months, balloons have emerged as a novel and unorthodox tool of conflict. North Korea has been deploying numerous balloons since May, each carrying bags of refuse, leading to heightened tensions between the two Koreas. These balloons have contained various items such as bottles, used batteries, and even manure, but more recently have been primarily transporting waste paper.

Pyongyang has said the launches are a tit-for-tat response to activists and defectors who have for years sent propaganda leaflets via balloons. Others have contained dollar drugs and painkillers like Paracetamol. 219
