Iran Press/Africa: The mourning ceremonies kicked off on Sunday evening and Monday morning in cities such as Abuja, Bauchi, Jos (the capital of Plateau State), Kano, and Potiskum, among others.
In the ancient city of Kano State, Sheikh Sunusi Abdulqadir led the hoisting of a new flag of Imam Hussain, signifying the start of a period of agony and sorrow. The Muharram mourning will continue for nine days, with scholars from different Islamic schools of thought delivering lectures about the holy sacrifice of Imam Hussain on the tenth day. On this day, mourners will hold processions across many cities and towns.
Imam Hussain was martyred along with his family and companions by the Umayyad army, 61 years after the Hijra of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his Progeny). Both Sunni and Shi'a Islamic books contain authentic hadiths in which Prophet Muhammad said, "Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain. Allah loves who loves Hussain and dislikes whoever dislikes Hussain."
The annual observance of Muharram in Nigeria highlights the unity and solidarity among Muslims in commemorating the sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his companions. It serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up for justice, truth, and the principles of Islam, even in the face of adversity. 204
