France's First Lady, Brigitte Macron, has suggested that her US counterpart, First Lady Melania Trump, is virtually held prisoner at the White House by US Secret Service.

The two First Ladies recently spent some time together during Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron's three-day visit to Washington.

French President Emmanuel Macron met with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, but Melania Trump looked serious and hardly-ever smiled during the three days.

Brigitte told French reporters:  "She can’t put a foot outside of the White House.  Every day, I go out in Paris.”

Melania was also seen refusing to hold Trump’s hand, which caught the attention of the world's media.

France's First Lady continued by saying:  "She is much more constrained than me. Melania can’t do anything. The security is terrible. She can’t even open a window at the White House because immediately the security services call and say ‘close it.’"

The French president’s wife added: “Everything is interpreted, over-interpreted. She’s someone who has a strong personality but she makes an effort to hide it.”

She also suggested that Trump’s wife was actually less stern than she appeared while hosting the French couple.

“On the contrary she is really fun. We have the same sense of humour. We laugh a lot together.”
