Israeli sources have reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the Israeli military to maintain its presence in the Syrian Jabal al-Sheikh region until at least the end of 2025.

Iran Press/West Asia: According to Israeli TV Channel 12, Netanyahu directed the Israeli armed forces to remain stationed in the Jabal al-Sheikh area and the demilitarized zone of Syria until the end of 2025.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Netanyahu, along with the head of the Shin Bet, the Defense Minister, and the Commander of Israel's Northern Command, visited the newly occupied Jabal al-Sheikh region. During the visit, Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, stated that the Jabal al-Sheikh summit serves as Israel’s eyes for monitoring both distant and immediate threats. "From this point, we observe Hezbollah on the right and Damascus to the left, with Israel directly in front of us. The Israeli army is here to protect the Golan Heights and Israeli citizens from any threats; this is the most important location for accomplishing this," he remarked.

Jabal al-Sheikh, strategically located in western Damascus and the northernmost point of the Golan Heights, provides Israel with expansive surveillance capabilities over southern Syria. The area has been a site of tensions and conflicts between Israel and Syria in recent years.

Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's government, the Israeli military has occupied additional Syrian territories, launching widespread attacks on Syrian military infrastructure and facilities across the country. In recent airstrikes, Israeli fighter jets targeted radar stations at the Deir ez-Zor military airport, missile bases in the Zama region, and weapons storage sites near the city of Tartus.

Since the fall of Assad's government, Israeli forces have crossed the demilitarized zone between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and the rest of Syria, further occupying areas near the Golan Heights in the Daraa and Quneitra provinces.

In related news, armed opposition groups in Syria began operations on November 27, 2024 (7th of Azar 1403) aimed at ousting Bashar al-Assad. After 11 days of fighting, on Sunday, December 8, they declared control over Damascus and the exit of Assad from the country.
