Iranian ambassador warns against resurgence of ISIS, other terrorist groups

Belgium (IP) - The Iranian ambassador to Belgium and the European Union said that with the transition of the Syrian crisis from the military to the political stage, one should be sensitive to the possibility of the resurgence of ISIS and other terrorist groups.

Iran PressEurope: The fifth round of the Brussels conference entitled "Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region" was held virtually on Tuesday with Gholamhossein Dehghani, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the European Union and Belgium, delivering a speech at the conference.

Dehghani said that the Syrian crisis is in its tenth year, adding: "This shows the bitter reality that the international community has no real will to resolve this crisis on the basis of international law, especially with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria."

Noting that Iran has always supported political solutions since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, the Iranian ambassador to Belgium said: "Iran, in cooperation with Russia and Turkey, has initiated the Astana process with the aim of ending military operations and finding a political solution."

The Iranian ambassador stressed that the imposition of unilateral sanctions is against international law, noting: "It is the duty of other countries to give the Syrian people the opportunity to decide on the future of their own country without any foreign intervention and to end the crisis."
