Tehran (IP) - Iran is among the top countries in blood donation across the world with 0.025 indexes of blood donation compared with the average global index of 0.015, the head of Iran's Blood Transfusion Organization (BTO) said.

Iran Press/Iran News: Attending a press conference on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, Peyman Eshqi responded to Iran Press question about Iran's position in the world, noting that with regard to blood safety, Iranian is among the tops donators in the world due to total screening.

Eshqi went on to say that considering the donation index in the world, Iran's index is 25 in 1,000 while the average number is 15 in 1000 population in the world.

The head of BTO pointed to the effects of plasma-therapy on the coronavirus patients' treatment and said that it could decrease the duration of hospitalization to 30% and the death toll to 50%.

According to the latest statistics, so far, 187,427 people in Iran have been infected with the coronavirus, and 148,674 of total infected people have recovered.

Blood Transfusion Organization is ready to receive plasma from recovered coronavirus patients in 22 bases, he added. Iran before coronavirus stands at 0.027 indexes.

Iran now stands in the first place among 21 countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the whole blood donation rate is an indicator of the general availability of blood in a country.

The median blood donation rate in high-income countries is 32.1 donations per 1,000 people.

This compares with 14.9 donations per 1,000 people in upper-middle-income countries, 7.8 donations per 1,000 people in lower-middle-income countries, and 4.6 donations per 1,000 people in low-income countries.
