The Islamic Republic of Iran would welcome the development of relations with the European Union based on mutual respect; the Iranian new Foreign Minister told the EU Foreign Policy Chief Josepe Borrell on a telephone conversation.

Iran PressCommentary: A look at the ebbs and flows of Iran-EU relations shows that the Islamic Republic has welcomed the development of relations with the EU in different eras but the European entity has not shown goodwill in response, an issue that has much harmed the bilateral relations.

The peak of the harms happened when the US, led by Donal Trump, unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA on May 18, 2018; a deal that was signed between Iran and P5+1 countries (Russia, China, UK, Germany, France, and the US) in 2015.

Although the EU condemned the US withdrawal, it took no step to ensure the Iranian side's interest within the framework of the commitments to the international agreement.

Therefore, the Islamic Republic's authorities stressed that although Iran would welcome the development of relations with the European countries, it would not rule out the dissatisfaction of Iran with the EU and some other European countries.

It seems that the most important issue in the relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the European Union as well as some European countries is that there is a lack of trust in relations, and in particular, the lack of trust of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the EU and some other European countries.

The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the European Union actually pursues the US hostile policy against the Islamic Republic of Iran. There again, although the European Union tries to show its readiness to develop relations with the Islamic Republic, it shows no goodwill and does not take practical steps in this regard, remaining subject to Washington's anti-Iranian policies.

The Iranian 14th administration, including President Pezeshkian and FM Araghchi, stress the expansion of ties with the EU yet they insist on the fact that the EU must take some actions to ensure the Islamic Republic's natural rights and taken-for-granted demand.

Borrell, for his part, expressed in the telephone conversation with Iran's FM Abbas Araghchi that political consolations between Iran and the EU would continue, and FM Aragchi stressed dialogue to remove the wrong policies of the European countries toward Iran.
