Iran Press/Iran News: In response to the news of the execution of 6 Iranian nationals imprisoned in Saudi Arabia on charges of drug trafficking, Karimi Shasti, the Consular Director General of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, announced the Foreign Ministry's strong objection to this action.
Karimi added: These individuals had been sentenced to death several years ago on charges of drug trafficking to Saudi Arabia, and during this period, the Foreign Ministry had made continuous efforts to provide them with consular services and reduce the announced punishment.
Criticizing Saudi Arabia's performance, Karimi said: The execution of death sentences, without prior notification to the embassy, is unacceptable and violates the rules and norms of international law, including the Convention on Consular Relations.
Karimi Shasti stated that in this regard, the Saudi ambassador to Tehran was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Islamic Republic of Iran's strong objections and the inconsistency of this action with the general trend of judicial cooperation between the two countries were conveyed to him in a note, emphasizing the need to provide the necessary explanation in this regard.
A legal-consular delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also scheduled to depart for Riyadh to follow up on the issue.
