Iran Press/ Iran news: In response to the repeated unfounded claims in the joint statement from the European Union (EU) leaders and the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC), Hungary's ambassador to Iran, Gyula Peto, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Following the issuance of the joint statement by EU leaders and the summary of last Thursday's meeting, the Iranian government expressed its strong objections to the claims presented.
During the meeting, the Director General for Western Europe at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the necessity for all countries, including EU member states, to adhere to international law and the United Nations Charter. This includes respecting the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of states.
The official condemned the EU's unfounded support for illegal claims against Iran's territorial integrity. He stressed Iran's sovereignty over the islands of Bu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb as a historical and legal fact, describing the EU's biased and irresponsible stance on this matter as unwarranted and devoid of any legal value.
Moreover, he called for an immediate cessation and correction of such statements.
The sovereignty dispute over the Persian Gulf islands of Bu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb dates back to the period of British colonial influence in the region. These islands were historically part of Iran but fell under British control in the early 20th century. In 1971, shortly before the formation of the UAE, Iran reasserted its control over the islands following the withdrawal of British forces. The UAE, established later that year, has since laid claim to the islands, a stance that Iran consistently rejects as baseless and historically inaccurate.
In response, the Hungarian ambassador stated that he would promptly relay Iran's objections to the EU authorities.
