Iran's sport squad heading for Tokyo's Olympic games

Tehran (IP) - The Iranian sports squad named 'Commander of Hearts' after the late Iranian Commander Lieutenant-General Qasem Soleimani will leave for Tokyo with more than 70 athletes and staff in attendance.

Iran PressIran news: In order to honor the great position of the martyrs and promote the culture of self-sacrifice in sports, Iran's National Paralympic Committee will name the squads sent to the Para-Asian and Paralympic Games after the martyrs and activists of Islamic Iran.

With the decision of the officials of this committee, the Iranian squad will be sent to Tokyo decorated with the name of Lt. Gen. Qasem Soleimani and with the title of the squad of 'the Commander of Hearts'.

In early 2020, former US President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes in the assassination of Gen. Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), near Baghdad airport.

Earlier, the Iranian squad to the Rio Paralympics in 2016 was named after the martyrs of Mina.

The Iranian squad also left for London in 2012 under the name of Rais Ali Delvari. Delvari was one of the most important figures in the struggle against British colonialism in southern Iran.

The National Paralympic Committee will also select the symbolic leader of the squad from among the families and children of the martyrs to promote the spirit of self-sacrifice.

The Tokyo Paralympics will be held in September in Japan, and the Iranian team will be sent to the competition with 59 athletes and 20 coaches.
