Tehran (IP) - The Minister of Road and Urban Development said that the membership of Iran's railway in the railway system of the Commonwealth of Independent States, as well as Turkey and Central Asian countries, and the agreements in this area had increased railway transit by more than 25 percent amid COVID-19 pandemic.

Iran Press/Iran News: In an interview with Iran Press, Mohammad Eslami expressed hope that the capacity of railways would increase from 50 million tons annually to 100 million tons.

Eslami said that Iran has tried to complete the railway development process by connecting the semi-finished line and new connections, especially Zahedan to Chabahar and Rasht to Astara.

Connecting to Afghanistan and Basra in Iraq via railway will able Iran to increase its transit corridor to the east and west gates, Mohammad Eslami noted.

The Islamic Republic of Iran's railway has expanded significantly after the Islamic Revolution and will increase from 4,000 km to about 14,000 km until the middle of next year, emphasized the minister.
