Tehran (IP)- The spokesman of Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), in reaction to the sinking of a boat carrying hundreds of refugees in the Mediterranean Sea, stated that illegal immigration to the West is caused by wrong policies of the U.S. and Europe.

Iran PressIran News: On 14 June 2023, a fishing boat smuggling migrants sank in international waters in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Pylos, Messenia, Greece. The boat, which left Tobruk, Libya, on 10 June, carried an estimated 400 to 750 migrants.The search and rescue effort by Greek authorities rescued 104 survivors including Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Afghans, and Palestinians, and recovered 80 bodies, with hundreds more missing and presumed dead.

In a post on his Twitter page on Tuesday, Nasser Kanani, the spokesman of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "Sinking of the boat carrying hundreds of refugees, including dozens of women and men from Asia and Africa in the Mediterranean Sea near the coast of Greece is sad and painful." 

"West cannot be irresponsible about the refugee crisis," added Kanani stressing "the West's wrong policies as the reason causing illegal migration."

Offering his condolences to the survivors and the families of the refugees, he asked God for peace and mercy for the souls of those who died in the painful tragedy.
