Iran Press/ Iran news - Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Thursday pardoned or commuted prison terms of 615 convicts, on the occasion of the Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) and Eid al-Ghadeer (The day of Islam Prophet Mohammad's (PBUH) assignment of Hazrat Ali (AS) as the first Imam of Shiias).
In a letter to the Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Amoli Larijani, head of the judiciary, presented a proposal for pardoning or reducing the sentences of 615 convicts, identified in a special commission of the Judiciary, based on Article 110 of the Constitution.
Article 110 of the Islamic Republic Constitution grants the Supreme Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the judiciary.
Eid al-Ghadeer which is a festive day observed by Shiite Muslims on the 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar is celebrated in Iran.
This day is to celebrate the appointment of Ali ibn Abi Talib by Muslims' Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) as his immediate successor.
It marks the anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) sermon, described in Hadith of the pond of Khumm, in which he stated, Whomsoever's master (maula) I am, Ali is also his (maula) master. O' God, love those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him."
