Iran Press/ Iran news: The Bagh Khooni (Bloody Garden) of Mashhad North East of Iran was under the control of the Russian Consulate for many years under the command of General Sergey Mikulotov, and in 1320 A.H it was used by the Russians as a base for shelling the people of the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS). The garden was also used for some time as the commercial office of the Russian government.
Ali Asghar Mounesan told reporters on Saturday after the opening ceremony of the Bagh Khooni historical monument in Mashhad: "The restoration of the valuable Bagh Khooni historical complex due to its historical antiquity is considered by this ministry and on the agenda of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism of Khorasan Razavi."
He added: "The Garden is one of the historical places that is mostly known by people in Mashhad and in the past it was known as an Iranian garden, but now its green space has been severely damaged."
While appreciating the Mashhad Municipality for owning this historical complex, he noted: "The special attention of the Governor of Khorasan Razavi and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage is also established and the revival of this garden is on the agenda and program as it has been in the past."
The Minister of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism said: "In the reconstruction phase, the construction of destroyed buildings is also planned, and currently the restoration of the green space of this complex, which has been severely destroyed, is being done by Mashhad Municipality."
The project of restoring the effect and green space of Mashhad Bagh Khooni Garden by the municipality of this city and under the supervision of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism of Khorasan Razavi and with budget of more than 220 billion rials began today in Mashhad.
The cultural-historical collection called 'Blood Garden' No. 3240 was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran on January 4, 2000, dating back to the Qajar period, and its privacy was included in the detailed urban plan in 2001
Historical texts refer to Nasser al-Din Shah's trip to Mashhad and his stay in this garden, and also in McGregor's travelogue, this garden is mentioned and at that time the garden was located outside the historical tower and fortifications of the old city of Mashhad.
It’s name probably goes back to the existence of springs, water sources and aqueducts that were known as 'Khonik, Khanik and Khin'.
The garden area is about 6.5 hectares and its central building is about 800 square meters, which is built on 2 stories with a gabled roof and wooden trusses and with an architectural style influenced by Russian architecture, and some of its neighbouring buildings have been destroyed or severely destroyed.
This garden is currently located on the northeastern side of Basij Square in Mashhad, on Onsori Street.
