St. Petersburg (IP) - On the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Summit, Iran's Minister of Housing, Roads and Urban Development met with the chairman and members of the Russian Transportation Commission and discussed the expansion of bilateral cooperation in the field of transportation.

Iran PressEurope: Iran and Russia share strategic interests in bilateral areas, especially in economic, military, security, regional and international issues, such as confronting American unilateralism, and this has been one of the main factors of close cooperation between the two sides in recent years.

Mehrdad Bazrpash, the Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran, who traveled to St. Petersburg on Thursday to participate in the 26th International Economic Summit in St. Petersburg and pursue the implementation of   bilateral agreements, met with Nikolai Maksimovich, the head of the transport commission of the Russian Duma and discussed different issues.

In this meeting, Mehrdad Bazrpash called for increasing cooperation between Iran and Russia in the executive and legislative fields, aiming at speeding up the implementation of joint projects, especially the North-South rail crossing.

"Iran Rah" as a new initiative in the field of development of transportation cooperation between Iran and neighboring countries, was one of the other topics discussed by Mehrdad Bazrpash and Nikolai Maksimovich.

The Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran, in the specialized meeting of the North-South railway crossing, which was held in the presence of the transport ministers of the countries along the route, as well as the special representatives of the Russian President, called the "Iran Rah" project a step towards securing the maximum economic benefits of the neighboring countries.

Bazrpash said: "The countries of the region can solve a major part of their transit and logistics problems by using Iran's ways and capacities."

In this meeting, Nikolai Maksimovich, the head of the transport commission of the Russian Duma, also expressed his satisfaction with the acceleration of the cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including in the transport industry, and said:

"After the signing of the agreement on the completion of the North-South railway crossing by the presidents Iran and Russia, a significant leap has begun in this field."

Maksimovich pointed to the great capacities of Iran and Russia in the field of rail, sea, road and air transportation and said: "The new initiative of "Iran Rah" and Iran's unique capacities will be profitable for all countries in the region."

Iran's Road and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash also met and talked with the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia on Thursday on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, a meeting that accelerated the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway as it has been considered as  the missing link of the western section of the North-South Corridor.

In this meeting, the parties emphasized the necessity of implementing the recent agreements between the presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation.

The implementation of bilateral agreements, the acceleration of executive actions for the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway section in the North-South intercontinental corridor and the completion of the sea, road, rail and air transport industry chain were among the other axes of these negotiations.

On the sidelines of this meeting, the Minister of Roads and Urban Development also met with the governors of Samara, Astrakhan and Chelyabinsk and emphasized the development of transportation cooperation between the provinces of the two countries.

Astrakhan governor Mikhail Babushkin, Samara governor Dmitry Azarov, Chelyabinsk governor Alexey Teksler and special assistant to the Russian president, Levitin in this meeting while presenting a report on the capacities of these regions in the field of transportation, demanded to remove the obstacles in the way of developing bilateral cooperation in this field. became

According to experts, the common routes for sending goods from India to Saint Petersburg, Russia are about 14,500 km long, but Iran's corridor on this route is only 7,200 km, which takes 40% of the transit time and 30% of the time to use this capacity. It reduces the percentage of shipping costs.

The agreement for the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway between Iran and Russia was signed on May 17, after the speech of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and the video conference speech of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, between the Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran and the Minister of Transport of Russia in Tehran.
