Iran Press/ Asia: The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is considered one of the essential transit routes connecting western and southern Asia regions. The INSTC was set up by three states of Russia, India, and Iran in September 2000 to promote transportation cooperation.
Rostam Ghasemi, Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran, said: Iran has a railway from Shahid Rajaei port, the southernmost point of the country, to Rasht in the north of the country, and now there are 162 kilometers of the railway from Rasht to Astara left, the completion and construction of which is one of the most critical issues in a 3-way meeting.
The construction of the Astara-Rasht international railway in Gilan province started in the border city of Astara.

The North-South International Corridor allows rail transit of goods from India and the Persian Gulf countries to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Russia, and Eastern and Northern Europe.
The route is estimated to be around 30% cheaper than the alternatives and almost twice as fast in terms of delivery times. Both India and Russia praised it as a tool for bilateral trade as well as the delivery of wares from India across Eurasia.
Referring to the previous agreements with Russia, especially during the visit of President Vladimir Putin to Iran, the Minister of Roads and Urban Development said that Russia was supposed to complete the remaining part of the Rasht to Astara railway.
