Iran (IP) - The holy shrines of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, and his brother Ahmad bin Mousa (AS), known as Shah Cherag, in Shiraz, southern Iran, hoisted black flags on the occasion of Muharram, the month of mourning for Imam Hussian's (AS) martyrdom.

Iran PressIran News: Pilgrims attended the holey shrines of Imam Reza (AS) and his brother on the first night of Muharram to begin the month, the first month of the Islamic calendar. 

Meanwhile, a large number of pilgrims attended the holy Shrine of Imam Hussain (AS) to show their love and respect for him.

More than 1,300 years ago, in 61 AH, Imam Hussein (AS), a grandson of Islam's Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his 72 companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq, after fighting courageously for justice against the much larger army of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I.
