Iran Press/ Iran news: In a special meeting of foreign diplomats living in Tehran on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Mohsen Spari pointed out that the Islamic Republic of Iran has done the best of its ability to fight against narcotics.
Spari stated: "Drug markets are complex and full of hundreds of industrial narcotics, and in recent years, we have witnessed the spread of these dangerous drugs. The issue has been reflected in the recent UN report in 2020 and 2021."
The Islamic Republic of Iran which was adjacent to Afghanistan, the largest producer of opium, suffered significant material and spiritual costs, and faced harsh sanctions on buying and selling counter-narcotics equipment.
The Head of the State Welfare Organization of Iran, Vahid Ghobadi Dana, considered the use of narcotics and addiction as the most critical social illnesses in the world that challenged human life, stressing the need to a comprehensive public collaboration to confront the issue.
"According to the latest report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in 2018, about 269 million people in the world used an illegal addictive substance at least once in the last year, and it is likely that by 2030 this number will increase to 299 million people," he added.
Highlighting the adjacency of Iran to the drug and alcohol-producing countries and the young population of the country as a vulnerable population, Ghobadi Dana noted that despite Iran's high commitment to fight narcotics, the issue of drugs consumption remained one of the country's challenges.
