Iran Press/ Europe: French police carried out an investigation with a certain speed given the sensitivity of the matter.
According to a source close to the case, the suspect was arrested on Sunday, September 10 by police officers from the 1st district of the Paris judicial police (DPJ).
On Saturday, September 9, firefighters and police were called in, around 6:40 a.m., for a fire that broke out in the immediate vicinity of this diplomatic building. The consulate is located just behind the Iranian embassy, 16 rue Fresnel, in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. The place is therefore considered particularly sensitive. According to initial findings, the fire spread to the facade and gate of the consulate, blackened by the advance of the fire. But it was quickly contained, without causing any injuries.
Very quickly, the criminal trial is favored. The Paris public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into intentional damage by fire, entrusted to the 1st DPJ. While investigators first suspected a Molotov cocktail being thrown, it appears that the fire was caused by a burning tire. The PJ identified a suspect who fled by car shortly after the incident, using video surveillance.
The man is identified as a 60-year-old Frenchman of Iranian origin, most likely a member of the terrorist group MEK.
This terrorist group has attacked Iran's diplomatic facilities in the European Union on multiple occasions. Previously, several embassies and diplomatic buildings belonging to Iran in different European Union countries were targeted by the Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MKO) group.
