Chief of General Staff of Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri

Chief of General Staff of Iran's Armed Forces said that the enemies sought to exploit recent protests over gasoline price hikes to imperil the country's security.

Iran Press/Iran news: Addressing a ceremony in Tehran on Saturday, Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri said that the recent incidents which followed the government's decision to increase the price of gasoline in the country were a plot against the country's security.

General Bagheri stated that the enemies thought they could exploit the sporadic protests over the gasoline price hikes to harm the country as they realized direct military conflict would be costly.

"What people were doing during the first 24 hours of protests was normal, but some came to the streets to imperil the security of the country," he noted, adding: "Had it not been for the courage of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in putting his support behind the decision of the heads of the three branches of the government and other actions taken in order to bring peace back to the country, the trend could have been problematic for the country."

"It is not natural for a peaceful protest against a decision to be quickly transformed into extreme violent riots, destruction, murder, and harm to people and places that undermine national security," Chief of General Staff of Iran's Armed Forces added.

The petrol price increase has prompted peaceful protests in Tehran and some other Iranian cities, with people expressing concern about the rising price of fuel and gasoline in Iran.

However, gangs of rioters infiltrated into people's peaceful protests and caused damage to public transportation and public property, including attacks on banks, shops, ambulances, and emergencies. The rioters are backed by the United States, the Israeli regime, and their cohorts.
