Ministers attend Majlis to answer questions on gasoline price hike

Iran's Deputy Minister of Industry, Mines, and Trade has said control on demand and supply can neutralize the knock-on effect of a rise in the price of petrol on prices of other goods and commodities.

Iran Press/Iran news: Iran's Deputy Minister of Industry, Mines, and Trade Hossein Modarresi who attended a meeting with lawmakers in the Majlis (parliament) on Monday was asked whether an increase in petrol price would affect prices of other goods and commodities, and said his ministry had adopted measures in the supply and distribution of goods as well as monitoring market prices, to ensure that there won't be a knock-on effect.

According to Iran Press, Modarresi said controlling the supply and distribution of goods contributes to control of the market, which in turn leads to stable prices.

One of the lawmakers also stressed practical measures in this regard, suggesting training of inspectors and systematic monitoring and control of prices.

Another lawmaker also emphasized on making appropriate decisions in this regard and avoiding any hasty measures.

The agenda for Monday's parliament session was a discussion on the impact of increasing gasoline prices on other commodities, and a number of ministers and economic officials attended the parliamentary session.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Minister of Industry, Mines and Trade, Reza Rahmani explained the impact of a hike in the price of gasoline on other commodities saying: "One of the main concerns of the authorities and the parliament is the control of inflationary effects of rising prices on prices of other commodities."

Noting the increase of gasoline price has both real and psychological aspects Reza Rahmani said: "One of the important steps taken in this regard is first to provide the essential goods, the second to control the psychological effects of price increases and third is to intensify surveillance from the beginning of production procedure to when it gets to the consumer."

He said the rise in commodity prices was less than the rise in the price of services.

Larijani: We should use Basij capacity to control prices

Ali Larijani, Parliament Speaker addressed Rahmani's statements, saying "One of the important issues is that some of the items that domestic companies produce or import have become expensive and we should warn these companies. In order to control prices, we should use Basij capacity."
