Corona death toll in US reached more than 7,000

At least 7,000 people with the Coronavirus infection have now died in the United States, the death toll has grown six-fold in eight days and now exceeds the number of people known to have died from the virus in mainland China.

Iran PressAmerica: Since the first US case of the Coronavirus was identified in Washington state on Jan. 21, health officials have identified more than 270,000 cases across the United States and more than 7,000 people have died.

The US recorded more than 1,000 deaths between Thursday and Friday, according to NBC News' tally.

The US economy lost 701,000 jobs in March, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the unemployment rate soared to 4.4 percent from 3.5 percent.

By March 17, the virus had expanded its presence from several isolated clusters in Washington, New York, and California to all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Worldwide, the total number of infections recorded since the beginning of the outbreak reached more than 1,098,762. Some 228,923 people have recovered globally, while nearly 59,172 have died.
