Iran Press/Asia: During his speech at the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held on 25-26 October in Baku, Shoukry presented Egypt's vision on a number of regional and international issues, reported Iran Press .
He described the Turkish offensive in northeast Syria as a violation of international law and the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement.
He called for an immediate suspension of the offensive, and withdrawal of troops, stressing the importance of the immediate commencement of the political process under United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254.
On October 9, Turkish military forces and Ankara-backed militants launched a long-threatened cross-border invasion of northeast Syria in a declared attempt to push Kurdish militants from the People's Protection Units (YPG) away from border areas. Ankara views the US-backed YPG as a terrorist organization tied to the homegrown Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been seeking an autonomous Kurdish region in Turkey since 1984.
Many countries, including Iran, and international organizations such as the UN and Arab League have criticized Turkey’s invasion of Syria, calling on Ankara to end the incursion into the Arab country.203
