IP - The death toll from earthquakes increased to the edge of nearly 38,000 on Tuesday. at least 31,974 people have been killed in the Türkiye, and more than 5,800 people are dead in Syria, according to the UN and the Syrian government.

Iran PressAsia: More than 8,000 people have been pulled out alive from rubble in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

The UN estimates more than 5 million people in Syria may be homeless after the earthquakes. Nearly 900,000 people are in urgent need of hot food in Turkey and Syria.

Syrian officials put the number to at least 9.7 million. The UN has launched an appeal for $397.6m to help victims in Syria.

Damages from deadly earthquakes in Turkey will probably exceed $20bn, according to the risk modeling company Verisk.

Round-the-clock efforts of Iranian rescue teams in Türkiye

In Turkey alone, an estimated 1 million people are living in tents and temporary shelters, while at least 80,000 people have been hospitalized. Up to 5 million people may be homeless in Syria, many already internally displaced after fleeing civil war.

More than a week after the quakes, there are growing concerns over emerging health issues linked to the cold weather, hygiene, and sanitation, and to the spread of infectious diseases, with vulnerable people, especially at risk.
