Khuzestan (IP) -The situation in Karkheh River in southwestern Iran is said to have reached a critical point.

Iran Press/Iran news: The district of Hamidiyeh in Khuzestan province is being threatened by fresh floods due to rising water levels in Karkheh river. As the danger of Karkheh river overflowing and bursting its banks persists, Hamidiyeh district, like flood-hit Susangerd, is threatened by fresh floods and precautionary and preventive steps are being taken to limit the damage from any fresh floods.

Furthermore, the residents of Hamidiyeh especially the young people have contributed to constructing a flood barrier so that the floodwaters are kept out of local houses, Iran Press reported.

The water of the Karkheh river has reached the Ahwaz-Andimeshk road so that the traffic is underway while the police is keeping a close watch on the situation and monitoring Ahwaz-Andimeshk road conditions.

So far, some 174 villages in the southwestern province of Khuzestan which are near the rivers of 'Dez', 'Karkheh' and' Karoon' have been evacuated with more than 30000 people settled in 43 camps.

As a matter of fact, the heavy raining has ended with high levels of water being stored behind dams so that the dams of Dez and Karkheh have been almost filled to capacity, and officials have been forced to let some water out of the dam to avoid an overflow or a catastrophic dam burst.

Since the levels of water in Dez and Karun rivers have dramatically risen, the relief operations for flood victims in the cities of Ahvaz, Khorramshahr, and Shushtar have begun.103/211/203
