Russia's foreign minister has stressed his country's solidarity with Venezuela in countering US sanctions.

Iran PressEurope: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Felix Placencia on Monday, stressing Russia's solidarity with the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the people of Venezuela in the fight against unilateral and illegal US sanctions, rejected hostile actions against the people of this South American country.

Lavrov stressed that Russia supports efforts to advance the national dialogue between the government and the Venezuelan opposition, which is currently on a positive path in the run-up to the elections.

The Russian official added that while respecting Venezuela's national sovereignty, Russia will continue to provide constructive assistance in resolving the country's internal disputes peacefully.

Russia's foreign minister also announced that Russian observers would be sent to Venezuela for municipal and regional elections on November 21.

At the end of the meeting, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister praised the constructive progress made in Moscow-Caracas relations and described Washington's actions against Caracas as a clear violation of the UN Charter, international law and the basic principles of coexistence among nations.

In recent years, the United States and its allies have sought to overthrow Venezuela's anti-American President Nicolas Maduro's government by threatening, imposing sanctions, pressure and economic blockade; an approach that has never been successful. 219
