Geneva (IP): Iran's representative to the United Nations Office in Europe called for the United States and some European countries to be prosecuted for illegal sanctions on the target countries.

Iran PressEurope: Esmail Baghaei Hamaneh, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, on the eve of the 48th session of the Human Rights Council, referred to the special report on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on respect for human rights, saying: "The time has come to prosecute the United States as the main culprit and some European countries to impose illegal sanctions on the target countries."

He added: "Sanctions are usually offered to everyone with a package of obvious distortions and lies, including so-called humanitarian exemptions and exceptions, which actually do not exist at all. Even the global emergency, the COVID-19 Pandemic, not only failed to force the United States to show humanity, but the scope and layers of Washington's unilateral sanctions have intensified over the past two years to the point that even (supplied and purchased) vaccines, have not excluded the COVAX mechanism from the negative and detrimental effects of these sanctions."

Iran's ambassador to Geneva called unilateral sanctions as wrongdoing that impose international responsibility on countries that commit them as accomplices, saying: "These actions are considered crimes against humanity due to their deliberate and public harmful effects on innocent citizens by putting them under severe economic hardships equivalent to hunger and famine. The prosecution should be part of any program to curb the negative impacts of sanctions on human rights."
