Iran Press/ Iran News: In response to European passivity and US withdrawal from the JCPOA, Iran has taken five steps to reduce its commitments and has recently begun enriching 20 percent uranium at the Fordow nuclear site to force other parties to comply with their commitments mentioned in JCPOA.
The strategic action act which is approved by the Parliament to lift the sanctions requires the Iranian government to take new steps within a specified period of time to persuade the other parties in JCPOA, with the aim of benefiting Iran from the agreement.
20% uranium enrichment has now been taken as a first step within the framework of the Iranian parliament. Mohammad Bagher GHalibaf, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (parliament) of Iran, said on Thursday on the sidelines of a visit to the 20% enrichment process at the Fordow nuclear site: "According to parliamentary law, the 20% uranium enrichment process is going well."
This step shows that Iran is serious about its principles and does not link its national interests to the games of the opposing sides. By committing itself to the JCPOA, Iran has demonstrated that all of its nuclear activities have been peaceful, and this has been repeatedly acknowledged in International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) periodic reports.
To further demonstrate its goodwill, Iran has voluntarily agreed to implement the Additional Protocol and conduct more inspections than expected, but now the situation has changed due to the continued inaction of the other sides in JCPOA. If the sanctions on Iran are not lifted by February 21, 2021, the next steps will be taken within the framework of the law of Iran's Parliament.
Kazem Gharib Abadi, Iran's representative to international organizations based in Vienna, wrote on Twitter on Thursday: "Iran's parliamentary law provides another opportunity to maintain completely unprecedented cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency by lifting sanctions, and if this opportunity is not seized, the current extraordinary cooperation will return to normal."
Iran has always fulfilled its obligations in JCPOA, and now the ball is in the court of the United States and Europe so that Iran can reap the economic benefits of JCPOA as soon as possible by lifting sanctions. If sanctions are lifted and Iran's oil sales, banking, and shipping return to normal, Iran will return to its obligations.
JCPOA's survival depends on the actions of the United States and Europe, because Iran's cooperation with IAEA and the fatwa of Iran's Leader as a guarantee of the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear industry, has been a clear and growing path to the success of Iran's nuclear program, and is not tied to JCPOA.
