Tehran hosts the 14th Governing Board Meeting of the UNESCO Regional Centre for Urban Water Management (RCUWM) on December 4th. Iran's Minister of Energy, Abbas Aliabadi, serving as the Chair of the Board, delivers a keynote speech at the one-day event.

Why it matters:

The gathering is assessing progress on the 2023–2029 work plan and setting new priorities for regional urban water management, including flood and drought mitigation, climate adaptation, and wastewater recycling.

Strengthened cooperation at this meeting is helping expand knowledge exchange and promote sustainable and innovative water solutions across the region.

The big picture:

Since its establishment in 2002, RCUWM has led regional efforts in capacity building, research, and urban water governance under UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme. The Governing Board meets every two years, with previous sessions held in Tehran and other member countries. Past meetings have delivered key outcomes, including the adoption of regional water strategies, joint initiatives on flood and drought management, and approval of the 2023–2029 work plan during the 13th meeting in Tehran.

Wht's going on:

The RCUWM Governing Board, as the centre’s highest decision-making body, is bringing together water ministers, ambassadors, UNESCO representatives, and delegates from major international organizations. The UNESCO Director-General’s representative in Paris, along with representatives of several international bodies, including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) are also joining the meeting online.
