UK, France, Germany call on to maintain Iran arms embargo

The United Kingdom, France and Germany in a statement on Friday openly supported the extension of Iran's arms embargo on the UN Security Council.

Iran PressEurope: The European Troika said in a statement that it would soon call for an extension of European sanctions on the export of conventional weapons and missile technology to Iran by 2023. They are looking to negotiate with Russia and China, as well as other members of the Security Council.

The UK, France and Germany also claimed in the statement that they are committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and they would spare no effort to maintain this international agreement.

The three European countries, the UK, France and Germany, in a theatrical move also expressed opposition to US efforts to re-impose the Security Council sanctions on Iran.

The European Union has repeatedly claimed that it seeks to maintain the nuclear deal, but in reality, it has not taken concrete steps since the United States withdrew from the JCPOA.

Meanwhile; as the UN arms embargo on Iran, part of Security Council Resolution 2231, draws to a close, the United States and its allies have redoubled their efforts to prevent it from ending.

Although the United States officially regardless of the UN Security Council 2231 withdrew from the JCPOA two years ago, it claims in a new legal interpretation that it is still one of the participants in the JCPOA and that it has the right to use the trigger mechanism.

The claim has received condemning reactions from Russia and China.

China's Permanent Mission to the United Nations recently stressed that the United States has violated Security Council Resolution 2231 by withdrawing from the JCPOA, and United States has no right to extend arms embargo against Iran, let alone to activate the mechanism for the automatic return of sanctions.

Russia's foreign ministry also said the United States could not use UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to extend Iran's arms embargo.

US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew his country from the international agreement on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, in violation of Washington's commitments under the JCPOA, and announced the return of nuclear sanctions.

Trump's move has drawn widespread domestic and international condemnation.
