Iranian Paralympian heavy-weight powerlifting champion, Siamand Rahman

The President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) voiced his condolences over the passing away of Iran’s Paralympic heavy-weight powerlifting gold medalist and champion, Siamand Rahman.

Iran Press/Europe: Andrew Parsons said on Monday: “The whole Paralympic Movement is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Siamand Rahman.”

He called Rahman “the world’s strongest Paralympian,” and said he “made global headlines at Rio 2016 when he became the first Para athlete to lift over 300kg.”

"Few will forget that phenomenal performance which marked a landmark in the history of Paralympic sport,” Parsons stated.

He further described the Iranian athlete as a “pioneer for his sport, an inspiration for many in his home country Iran, and around the world, and a fantastic ambassador for the Paralympic Movement.”

The President of the IPC added: "He was also a wonderful human being, a gentle giant and one of the friendliest people you could ever meet.”

"The thoughts and deepest condolences of the whole IPC, World Para Powerlifting and the Paralympic Movement are with Siamand’s family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time,” he concluded.

Siamand Rahman was taken to the hospital after a heart attack on Sunday whilst at home. The efforts of doctors and medical staff who tried to save him were unsuccessful and he passed away on Sunday afternoon.

He was a member of the Iran Paralympic powerlifting team. He had won gold medals at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio and the 2010 Asian Para Games in Guangzhou.
