Russian president and his French counterpart have agreed to make further efforts to keep the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JPCOA), in place.

Iran Press/Europe: Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron also called on all parties involved in the latest escalation of tensions between Iran and the US to show restraint, the Kremlin press service said on Sunday after their telephone conversation.

The two sides also discussed Iran-UD tension and called on all the parties to show restraint.

Tensions around Iran escalated following a US drone strike near Baghdad's airport on January 3, which killed Lt. General Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps' Quds Force.

On January 8, Iran targeted Iraq’s Ein Al-Asad airbase and a facility in Erbil, which house the US forces, in retaliation for the attack.

After that, US President Donald Trump declared that Washington would instantly tighten economic sanctions against Tehran. At the same time, he claimed that the US was ready for peace with Iran.
