Tehran (IP) - During a visit to Tehran on Wednesday, the Iraqi Foreign Minister met with the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the two sides discussed bilateral relations and regional developments.

Iran PressCommentary: Iranian Foriegn Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in the meeting that in the coming months, we can expand the relations between Iran and Iraq in various fields; In the last seven months, the volume of trade and cooperation between the two countries has increased four and a half times.

The Iranian Foreign Minister added: "In this meeting, we emphasized the important role of the Iraqi regions and appreciated the role of the Iraqi government in establishing regional understanding."

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein said at the press conference that the security of Iran and Iraq is interlinked, and that bilateral issues, including trade and economic relations, and security issues were discussed during the meeting.

Iran-Iraq relations in the framework of neighborhood policy and good neighborliness, despite some problems such as Iraq's debt to Iran due to electricity and gas exports and issues related to border waters and environmental issues, is expanding. Among the Arab countries in the West Asian region, Iraq has the most cultural and religious affinities with Iran. Having the longest border between neighbors (about 1258 km land border and 351 km water border), racial, historical, linguistic ties, religious commonalities and the existence of common security and economic threats and interests are important points in Iran-Iraq relations. And the statements of the Iranian and Iraqi officials show the serious determination of the two countries to develop comprehensive relations.

Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and Iraqi President Barham Salih on April 3 in a telephone call stressed the need for effective and active cooperation between the two countries to establish stability and security in the region and strive to develop economic and trade relations in the interests of the two nations.

In recent years, Iran's effective role in resolving regional crises, especially in the fight against ISIL and terrorism in the region, as well as exposing the sinister plans of the United States and the Israeli regime in waging war and trying to create divisions among different parties and groups in Iraq. And Syria has shown the fact that relying on the United States and its supporters will not only be fruitless, but also it will be to the detriment of the national interests of the countries in the region.

The President of Iran has emphasized in this regard that any country in the region that neglects the hegemonic goals of the United States and the Israeli regime will both trample on the interests of its nation and will be angered by Muslim nations.

The Israeli regime's attempt to be present in countries such as Iraq and to use it to spy on and act against Iran and the resistance forces can be evaluated in this context. Of course, Iran has always warned about these threats, and even in response to the Israeli regime's atrocities, the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps targeted the strategic center of the Zionist conspiracy in Iraqi Kurdistan on March 13 with 12 surface-to-air missiles.

Economically, Iran and Iraq have expanding relations. For the past two decades, Iran has been an important trading partner with Iraq; The two countries' joint economic commissions also aim to increase trade to $ 20 billion. The two countries' border markets are active in different regions, and Iran is one of Iraq's major suppliers of electricity.

"In the economic field, Iraq is one of Iran's main partners, and both countries are oil exporters, and we can draw strategic economic plans between the two countries," said Mohsen Pak-Ain, an international affairs expert.

Obviously, Iran-Iraq relations are beyond the neighborhood, and according to the ties and the needs of the neighborhood, the future of relations between the two countries can be considered stable and expanding; In addition to the position that these two countries have in regional arrangements and bilateral relations with each other, they can play an important role in regional convergence by developing relations.
