Iran Press/ Europe: An American professor has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for her work studying women’s earnings and participation in the labor market over time, and the main sources of the remaining gender gap.
The prestigious award was given to Claudia Goldin, the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard on Monday. According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Goldin "collected over 200 years of data from the US, allowing her to demonstrate how and why gender differences in earnings and employment rates have changed over time."
Her research uncovered the reasons for gender gaps in labor force participation and earnings. Goldin, who in 1990 became the first woman to be tenured at the Harvard economics department, is only the third woman to win the Nobel economics prize.
Goldin, 77, was recognised for her research showing that women are paid less than men on average despite having higher education levels and that most of the gap appears after childbirth. 219
